I've noticed a ton of online debate between ACHI (mainly for HDD) and RST (better suited for SSD) and their performance. Because you can't dual boot using RST, I decided to run a few performance tests on M.2 NVME storage; as AHCI is technically less performant.
I tested my 256G SSD both with IDE mode and AHCI mode (As an SSD Benchmark). It has a large boost in sequential read (338 MB/s to 488 MB/s), a dramatic boost in 64-threads-4k-read (22.8 MB/s to 175 MB/s) and 64-thread-4k-write (96 to 179).
IDE mode can occasionally benefit from slightly faster read and write speeds in some tests. TRIM support works in both modes fine. Overall, most SSD drives deliver better performance in AHCI mode, but it is not night and day. How do you know you're using IDE or AHCI? Go to Device Manager and expand the hard drive controllers.
