The Bible was first translated into Castilian Spanish in the so-called Pre-Alfonsine version, which led to the Alfonsine version for the court of Alfonso X (ca. 1280). The complete Catholic Bible was printed in 1785, since the Inquisition had allowed Bible translations a few years earlier.
The translation is based on the original Greek and Hebrew text and also included the deuterocanical books of the Old Testament. This highly popular and widely used Spanish Bible had its first editorial revision in 1602 by Cipriano de Valera, who gave more than twenty years of his life to its revisions and improvements.

The Reina-Valera is a Spanish translation of the Bible, first published in 1569 in Basel, Switzerland and nicknamed the "Biblia del Oso" (in English: Bible of the Bear). The facsimile reproduction of this historic text was published by the Spanish Bible Society (1970 ISBN 84-8083-073-5).
