Content-based instruction (CBI) is an umbrella term that refers to instructional approaches that make a dual, though not necessarily equal, commitment to lan-guage- and content-learning objectives.
There are three main CBI models: theme-based language instruction, sheltered subject matter instruction, and adjunct instruction. All three models use content as a starting point, relate to student interests, use authentic materials, and accommodate different language proficiency levels.
