5 lip 2018 · Cases of acute appendicitis due to metastatic prostate cancer are rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. We report a case of a 72 year old male with a history of metastatic prostate cancer that caused acute appendicitis prompting surgical intervention.
In the elderly, like in younger cohorts, acute appendicitis most commonly arises without neoplastic underpinnings. However, the occurrence of acute appendicitis in a patient with a concurrent abdominopelvic malignancy should trigger suspicion for the possibility of a metastatic appendiceal neoplasm.
