ACSM’s Health-Related Physical Fitness Assessment Manual, 5th edition UPDATE – Pages 151-156, Table 8.9: Fitness Categories for Maximal Aerobic Power for Men and Women by Age updated from 2009 to 2013
Absolute- Liters per minute (L•min-1) Used to convert consumption to a rate of energy expenditure. Relative- ml per kg body weight per min (ml•kg-1•min-1) Used to compare VO. 2 among varying body sizes. Gross- Total consumption rate under any circumstances, either in absolute or relative.
For a 30-year-old female, a VO2 max of 45-52 would be classified as “good,” and a VO2 Max of 52 or greater as “superior.” See the VO2 Max charts below for an understanding of how the classifications move across genders and ages.
For a male of this age, the cardiorespiratory fitness classification is considered “fair” according to ACSM (2), and a moderate-intensity target of 55% oxygen uptake reserve (V̇O 2 R) was chosen; this equates to a target V̇O 2 of 26.88 mL·kg −1 ⋅min −1. For a recap of how to calculate V̇O 2 R, see Box 2. Box 2.
This calculator converts a VO2 max score to a percentile rank, so people of different ages can be compared. The form fields below will ask you to enter your age, your VO 2 max score from a recent maximal exercise test, and your sex.
