In October of 1999 the Pueblo of Acoma Tribal Council and Tribal Administration established the Office of Historic Preservation. By doing so, the Pueblo sought to address the increasing loss of history, culture and language of the Acoma people.

The first Spanish conquistador to set foot on Acoma soil described the village as “the most fortified settlement I have ever seen.”
21 cze 2023 · The pueblo’s lofty, isolated location made it virtually impenetrable throughout the precontact period, which allowed the village and its people to flourish and develop distinct cultural traditions – many of which the Acoma community still honors today.
Today, the Acoma are actively involved in the preservation of their culture in an approach that includes the Acoma Language Retention Project, as well as the conception that they are on an ongoing journey that demands engagement with the changing world around them.
