When I finally got the recovery text, I went back to iforgot account recovery on Apple website with a link that was provided by the text message. There I was able to log back into my Apple account and all was well.
Apple support says there is no way to recover account if the Trusted Phone number gets changed, which is crazy as that is the first thing that someone would do. Anyway to get this resolved?
Once you start account recovery the only thing you should do is go to iforgot.apple.com. It will tell you in real time how much longer you have. Check in randomly.
Someone hacked my AppleID account and changed the Trusted Phone number and the Password. I have been unable to reset it on my own, and the overnight support has not been able to help either. I also can't get account recovery because I don't know what the phone number was that they changed it to.
As a result, I am locked out of my iCloud account on all my devices and cannot access my photos and files, beyond what is still accessible on my Mac local storage/my external hard drive backups. I called Apple and there is nothing they can do.
