  1. Log in to iCloud.com, and appleid.apple.com on a web-browser, on a PERSONAL COMPUTER at least once in a while, save the browser as trusted and that way – it's another emergency backdoor to your iCloud data (photos, contacts, iCloud email) if you do lose access to your Apple ID.

  2. When signed into iCloud on a device it will periodically send a "heartbeat" to Apple saying "hey, I'm here and active". If this "heartbeat" is received by Apple during account recovery it will stop the process with no warnings. This information is in the fine print that no one reads.

  3. If you lose your phone and don't have any other devices on your apple ID account then you are straight fucked and can't restore the replacement device from icloud back ups until this insane process of getting a new trusted number added completes which takes forever.

  4. Once you start account recovery the only thing you should do is go to iforgot.apple.com. It will tell you in real time how much longer you have. Check in randomly.

  5. The only way to check the status of recovery is to go to the recovery site and attempt another one and see what it says. I had this issue with the main Apple account at my job (someone changed the password and forgot it). When you contact Apple, the people you talk to have no access to this process at all and can't help. Reply. putainsamere.

  6. If free (5 GB account) and your phone truly is not associated with an account (something I find that highly unlikely), I would just create a new account and associate your phone with that. and when setting up a new account, do remember to provide Apple with recovery information.

  7. If you don't know your Apple id password, and you aren't signed in to any other apple devices under that Apple id, you have to go into account recovery because you can't get the two factor verification code texted to your phone if it's stolen/lost.
