Overall: I recently had a very negative experience as a new Business Owner on Yelp. My experience (particularly in relation to the advertising program that was pushed upon me via multiple phone calls after initially creating my business profile) felt like a scam, and Yelp’s subsequent lack of communication makes me feel like I was ‘scammed’.
Yelp’s policies strictly prohibit compensated and incentivized reviews as they can mislead consumers. To help inform people’s spending decisions, we issue Consumer Alerts that appear over a business’s reviews to warn people when we discover suspicious review activity.
Check with the local Home Builders Association and consumer protection officials to see if they have complaints against a contractor. Also search online for the company’s name with words like “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” Read reviews with a critical eye.
