Decision-making related to the care of patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is complex. Aneurysms present with varying risks of rupture, and patient-specific factors influence anticipated life expectancy, operative risk, and need to intervene.
Three patients (33.3%) showing pedunculated thrombus (one in pararenal aorta, one at the level of the celiac aorta, and one in the thoracic aorta) were immediately treated with the association of systemic anticoagulation and aortic surgery.
We present our experience of managing 19 patients with aortic mural thrombus in an otherwise normal aorta and review published literature and contemporary management strategies of aortic mural thrombus based on morphologic features of the thrombus as well as its anatomic location.
