Energy commodity price volatility began mounting in December 2021 when reports of a potential Russian invasion of Ukraine increased. In the first two weeks after the invasion, the prices of oil, coal and gas went up by around 40%, 130% and 180% respectively (Chart A). Gas prices also drove up wholesale electricity prices in the euro area.
