We can trace the history of algebra over the entire 4000 years of recorded mathematics, even if algebra as a subject is noticeably younger. However, the advent of abstract algebra is fairly recent. Students often feel that this subject has no apparent connection to the familiar high school algebra.
Algebra began with computations similar to that of basic arithmetic, but with letters standing in for numbers. Algebra as a proper eld of mathematics can be traced to the end of the 16th century, but the true theory of algebra started much earlier.
