Excel has evolved significantly from its origins as VisiCalc, the first electronic spreadsheet created in the late 1970s. It was succeeded by Lotus 1-2-3 in 1983, which became the dominant spreadsheet until Microsoft released the first version of Excel for Windows and Macintosh in 1985.
