10 sty 2023 · Thyroid nodules are growths that occur in the thyroid gland forming a lump or bump within the otherwise smooth, even thyroid. Thyroid nodules are common, occurring in 40% of women and 30% of men during their lifetime. Overall prevalence of thyroid nodules in the general population has been estimated as high as 65-68% based on autopsy studies.

The normal dimensions of the thyroid gland include two lobes and the isthmus between them. The lobes of the thyroid gland should be 50-60 mm long. The length of the thyroid isthmus should be 15-20 mm, and its normal thickness is 5-10 mm. The volume of the thyroid gland is measured by ultrasound (US).

The initial mean nodule volume was comparable for nodules with relevant rapid growth (2.62 ± 0.96 cm 3), with relevant moderate growth (2.3 ± 1.31 cm 3) and no growth (2.47 ± 1.29 cm 3; p = 0.657).
A total of 49% of the nodules were between 1 to 1.9 cm, 27% between 2 to 2.9 cm, 14% between 3 to 3.9cm and 11% were greater than 4cm. Based on the findings at surgery, 13% of the nodules were cancers and of these, papillary thyroid cancer was the most common type (86%).
