Rather than being a scripture devoted to a particular faith, the book's various authors filled the pages with their own vision of true virtue, providing guidance for defeating evil. The Book of Exalted Deeds rarely lingers in one place.

Book of Exalted Deeds. Strike Down Evil with the Sword of Enlightenment. Only those who are pure in word, thought, and deed may look upon the knowledge gathered within this blessed tome. For the blinding truths inscribed within offer nothing but redemption or destruction for the wicked.
An evil creature that tries to read from the book takes 24d6 radiant damage. This damage ignores resistance and immunity, and can't be reduced or avoided by any means. A creature reduced to 0 hit points by this damage disappears in a blinding flash and is destroyed, leaving its possessions behind.

In DnD, evil entities are Evil, and killing them is Good. Otherwise, the system just doesn't work. I do agree that certain actions - particularly torture - are Evil in DnDverse, and a type of evil my players are frequently uncomfortably willing to engage in.
