Abstract. Suicide is a leading cause of maternal death during pregnancy and up to a year after birth (perinatal period). Many psychological and psychosocial risk factors for maternal suicidal ideation and behaviour have been investigated.
24 maj 2022 · For example, a study reported that suicidal ideation is associated with poor cognitive development in children (Mebrahtu et al., 2020). Another study showed that pregnant participants with suicidal ideation have a fourfold risk of delivering a low-birth-weight baby (Gelaye et al., 2019).
Pregnancy and the period after delivering a baby can be one of the riskiest times for depressive symptoms, with suicide among the leading causes of death among new moms. And now a new study suggests that suicide “near misses” during pregnancy and after childbirth are increasing.
