A ratio compares two quantities in a given order. For example, if the number of oranges in a bag is twice that of the number of apples, this is a ratio of to 1 and is writen as: 2. 2 : 1. Each number is called a term of the ratio. The order in a ratio is important. The ratio of oranges to apples is 2 :1.
In a secondary school of 1000 pupils, there are 400 pupils in KS3 and 250 pupils in KS5. Write the ratio of KS3 to KS4 to KS5 pupils. Give your answer in its simplest form. Number of KS4 pupils = 1000 – (400 + 250) = 350.

RATIO & PROPORTION. A RATIO is a comparison between two quantities. We use ratios everyday; one Pepsi costs 50 cents describes a ratio. On a map, the legend might tell us one inch is equivalent to 50 miles or we might notice one hand has five fingers. Those are all examples of comparisons – ratios.
