The next active deployment was Afghanistan in 2006, when 3 PARA formed the nucleus of a 1,200 strong all-arms Battle Group with 16th Air Assault Brigade. This was a fiercely contested tour against Taliban insurgents during which three Battalion soldiers were among 14 soldiers killed and 45 wounded in the Battle Group.

The 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment (3 PARA), is a battalion sized formation of the British Army's Parachute Regiment and is a subordinate unit within 16 Air Assault Brigade. Roled as an Airborne light infantry unit, the battalion is capable of a wide range of operational taskings.
