1. The Physical Properties of Tungsten. Tungsten (W) is a rare silver-white metal and belongs to group VIB of the periodic table. Tungsten has a steel-like appearance but has a high melting point, low vapor pressure, and a low evaporation rate.
Chemical Properties. Tungsten is stable in air up to 350°C, but begins to oxidize above 400°C. A thin film of blue tungsten oxides forms on the surface, and this at first prevents further attack. As the temperature increases, cracks develop in the oxide film, and these favor oxidative attack.
