The 20" is my go-to long-range .22. As others have stated, velocities tend to be more consistent in the longer barrel, and there is some evidence that the extra barrel length aids in further stabilizing the bullet as well. Of interesting note, at a certain point, additional barrel length will actually slow the bullet slightly as well.

9 lut 2005 · Re: .22 LR Barrel Length vs. Accuracy For what it's worth, I've read where--for the .22 LR rimfire--the "optimal" barrel lengths are: 20 inches - for standard or subsonic rimfire ammo where muzzle velocities are around 1100 fps or less. 18 inches - for high-velicity rimfire ammo where muzzle velocities are around the 1300 fps mark.
So I’ve been seeing things all over the internet about the barrel lengths in .22lr rifles. Everything from “16 inches is the longest it should ever be,” to “studies found that barrels longer than 20 inches give best accuracy,” and everything in between.
18 paź 2023 · Bryan Lirz of Applied Ballistics tested over 800 22 Long Rifle types in rifle barrels from 16 to 24 inches and found that there was an average increase in muzzle velocity of 1.17 fps for each inch increase in barrel length.
