Grace, mercy, and peace: John presents a slightly expanded version of the standard greeting in New Testament letters. He didn’t just wish these for his readers; he confidently bestowed them by saying they will be with you from God the Father.
4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. 1:4 If John has a particular Church in mind then again he is found to be rejoicing that the members of the congregation are walking in, the truth. By using the word "walking" John, indicates a steady state of spiritual maturity.
2 John Bible Companion. Truth and love go hand in hand. According to 2 John, you can’t have one without the other. Love without truth is merely emotion, yet truth without love feels empty. John taught the church that our obedience to God should be motivated by love and informed by scriptural truth.

If they are ignored or rejected, we have set our course for misery in this life and a fiery eternity.

This great statement should challenge our thinking often, especially at times when we are tempted to avoid the truth. There is no way to escape TRUTH! It will always be. It will be the basis of our judgment on the “last day” (John 12:48).
