On 13 March 1992, a moment magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck eastern Turkey. It had a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) and occurred along the North Anatolian Fault. At least 498 people died, roughly 2,000 were injured, and an unknown number of people went missing.
The 1992 earthquake occurred in between the 1939 and 1784 rupture zones, a situation that enhances its interest. The NAF-1 was decoupled by normal faulting from the NAF-2, as shown by the total absence of aftershocks in the 1784 gap.
14 mar 1992 · earthquake measuring 6.8 on richter scale hit turkey about 40 kms east of city of erzincan (560 kms east of ankara) on 13 march at 20.19 hrs local time (1719 hrs gmt) preliminary position of ...
1 kwi 1997 · A kinematic model of the 1992 Erzincan earthquake combines aftershock field information, neotectonic observations, satellite image interpretation and body-waveform inversion. The complex earthquake rupture starts on the NAF and propagates bilaterally.
Abstract. —The Erzincan strike-slip earthquake of March 13, 1992 ruptured a section of the North Anatolian fault (NAF) at the northern margin of the Erzincan basin. The focal depth of about 10 km was less than given by ISC and NEIC.
The epicenter of this earthquake was located 7.7 km from the eastern end of the North Anatolian fault. The strong motions recorded in Erzincan had peak ground accelerations of approximately 0.5 g, accompanied by a pulse of 2 seconds. The duration of the earthquake was 7 seconds.
