2 lut 1972 · Before the Sapporo Games, Japan had never won a gold medal in the Olympic Winter Games. But in the normal hill ski-jumping event, Yukio Kasaya led from start to finish to claim gold. His team-mates Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi won the silver and bronze to complete the Japanese clean sweep.

In April 1966, at the 64th IOC session in Rome, the Winter Olympics 1972 was finally awarded to Sapporo, Japan, with 32 votes. The other candidate cities were Banff, Canada - with 16 votes, Salt Lake City, USA and Lahti, Finland, with seven votes each.
