25 cze 2019 · The 1920s timeline was one of the most exciting times in American History. At least, that is how it has been romanticized. It was the decade women got the right to vote, Prohibition, Bootlegging, Gangsters, and Motion Pictures.
1923: September 15 Oklahoma governor J. C. Walton places his state under martial law to control racial violence caused by the white supremacist group, the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). 1924: March 10 J. Edgar Hoover is appointed acting director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
Despite the efforts of politicians such as Warren Harding, the 1920s would be anything but “normal.” The decade so reshaped American life that it is remembered by many names: the New Era, the Jazz Age, the Age of the Flapper, the Prosperity Decade, and, most commonly, the Roaring Twenties.
NATIONAL POLITICS: THE ELECTIONS OF THE 1920S. Throughout the decade, the Republican Party controlled the federal government. The three U.S. presidents to follow Democrat Woodrow Wilson (1856–1924) into office were all Republicans. Both houses of Congress had gained Republican majorities by the end of the 1910s.
With the end of World War I and the passage of the Eighteenth Amendment, Americans entered the distinctive 1920s — an era of Republican leadership, nationalistic and fundamentalist movements, and changing social conventions.
