Minting Process. The Mercury Dime was struck with a composition of 90% Silver and 10% Copper, adhering to the standard dime specifications of the time. The Denver Mint was one of three facilities that produced this dime in 1916, with the distinguishing ‘D’ mint mark.
Walter Breen has written that mint production of dimes in Denver in 1916 was stopped so that personnel could devote full time to making quarters. The original mintage of 264,000 for the 1916-D is by far the lowest of the Mercury dime series.
