15 wrz 2024 · The Louisiana Purchase (French: Vente de la Louisiane, lit. 'Sale of Louisiana') was the purchase of the territory of Louisiana by the United States from the French First Republic in 1803. The U.S. purchased 828,000 square miles of land for $15 million ($293,133,333 in 2024).
In 1803 the area of the United States was much smaller than it is today. In that year, however, the country bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The territory stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada. The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States.
The Louisiana Purchase was the largest and most extraordinary land purchase in the history of the United States. It was also the cheapest (per square mile). At the turn of the 19th Century, Americans were moving further westward.
The land that the United States purchased from France in 1803 included all or part of 15 present-day states. After negotiations between the United States and Spain, the southwestern boundary of the territory was changed in 1819. With its final boundaries, the Louisiana Purchase included all or part of 13 modern states.
