The Original Sixteen-To-One Mine is located in Alleghany, California, in the Alleghany Mining District, currently a part of the Tahoe National Forest. This underground mining operation has a rich historical background.
The “Sixteen” was the last sustained commercial lode-gold mining operation in California; Alleghany was the last California community where the economy was based chiefly on gold mining. At the present time there are only a few intermittent prospecting operations in the district.
