Grading in education is the process of applying standardized measurements for varying levels of achievements in a course. Grades can be assigned as letters (usually A to F), as a range (for example, 1 to 6), as a percentage, or as a number out of a possible total (often out of 100).
In many countries, the labeling is altogether different. In the UK, for example, ‘grades’ might be called ‘years’ as in Year 1, Year 2, and so on. So, the following list of ages by grade levels is based on the United States but should roughly apply to the formal education system for most countries.
13–14: Eighth grade; 14–15: Ninth grade; 15–16: Tenth grade; The last school before higher education is called videregående skole (ongoing school) and is voluntary, though most choose to attend. At this level students decide among separate career-related schools.
A score of 14 out of 17 on a test, assignment or class is a 82.35% percentage grade. 3 questions were wrong or points missed. A 82% is a B- letter grade. A grade of B- means good or slightly above average performance. The teacher may round up the 82.35% to a 83% for a B letter grade.
