Tenth Air Force was a United States Army Air Forces combat air force created for operations in India, Burma and Indochina during World War II in the China Burma India Theater of operations.
Responsible for air defense and early warning forces based in the northern central and later southern central U.S. from 1966-1969. From 1976, exercised intermediate command over reserve component flying training, fighter, bomber, air refueling, rescue, space and special operations forces.
Constituted as Tenth AF on 4 Feb 1942 and activated on 12 Feb. Moved to India, Mar-May 1942. Served in India, Burma, and China until Mar 1943 when Fourteenth AF was activated in China. Then the Tenth operated in India and Burma until it moved to China late in Jul 1945.
Maj. Gen. Howard C. Davidson, Commanding General of the 10th Air Force, has relinquished his post as Air Commander of the Strategic Air Force, Eastern Air Command, which remains at its old headquarters, and has been replaced by his former deputy Air Commodore F. J. W. Mellerah, A.F.C.
The formation of Fourteenth Air Force in March 1943 split the Tenth in half. From then to mid-October 1943 the Tenth’s major forces were the India Air Task Force and the Assam American Air Base Command (formed in June and later called American Air Command No. 1).
Tenth Air Force units, comprised of 23rd Fighter Group and 11th Bomb Squadron (M) on Detached Service, were based in China under control of the China Air Task Force of the Tenth Air Force, created 4 July 1942, and commanded by Brig. Gen. Claire Chennault.
