11 kwi 2022 · French artist Jules Cheret became known as the father of the modern poster. He founded his own lithography workshop in 1866 and created around 1,200 posters in 40 years.
The Gutenberg era's first poster is dated 1477 and is signed by William Caxton—the first printer in England—: an advertising poster listing the benefits of thermal waters. In 1482 the first illustrated poster, made by Jean du Pré, makes its appearance in France.
Just three years later, Alphonse Mucha, a Czech working in Paris, created the first masterpiece of Art Nouveau poster design. Bearing multiple influences including the Pre-Raphaelites, the Arts and Crafts Movement, and Byzantine art - this flowering, ornate style became the major international decorative art movement up until World War I.
Although printed public advertisements can be traced to the 15th century, the poster as it is understood today did not emerge until around 1860, given impetus by the invention of lithography, which allowed brilliantly coloured posters to be produced cheaply and easily.
