Hormon BNP jest wydzielany jest za pomocą komórek mięśnia sercowego (głównie przez lewą komorę). NT-pro-BNP to nic innego jak peptyd natriuretyczny, wytwarzany przede wszystkim w przedsionkach serca.
Oznacza się stężenie BNP lub NT-proBNP we krwi w celu oceny niewydolności serca. BNP był uprzednio zwany mózgowym peptydem natriuretycznym z uwagi na to, że występuje w tkance mózgowej (oraz aby odróżnić go od podobnego białka wytwarzanego w przedsionkach lub górnych komorach serca, zwanego ANP).
