1 cze 2021 · The Roman Agora of Athens is located on the northern side of the Acropolis. By a paved path, it is connected to the Ancient Agora in Thissio, which was a place for political gatherings for the Athenians.
The Roman Agora has not today been fully excavated, but is known to have been an open space surrounded by a peristyle. To its south was a fountain. To its west, behind a marble colonnade, were shops and an Ionic propylaeum (entrance), the Gate of Athena Archegetis.
2 cze 2021 · The original agora was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BCE, but the Athenian statesman Pericles (l. 495-429 BCE) oversaw its restoration and development between 460-429 BCE. This version of the district remained the commercial and political center of Athens even after Greece fell to Macedon after the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE.
In this later period the agora influenced the development of the Roman forum and was, in turn, influenced by it. The forum , however, was conceived in a more rigid manner than the agora and became a specific, regular, open area surrounded by planned architecture.
27 maj 2024 · The Roman Agora quickly became the center of civic and commercial life in Athens under the Empire. It hosted a regular produce market as well as permanent shops selling luxury goods like jewelry, pottery, and perfumes.
21 maj 2021 · The agora continued as an important site of commerce, public discourse, and social life through the early Roman period but was destroyed in 267 CE by the Germanic Heruli and in 396 CE by the Visigoths. In the 7th century CE, some buildings – like the Temple of Hephaestus – were converted into churches and so preserved.
What's the story. Hail Caesar—the Athenians did with a magnificent Doric gateway to usher citizens into centre of public life during the city’s Roman era. Why it's important. It was the city’s civic centre under Roman rule. The far end was marked by the Tower of the Winds.
