Van Gogh is today one of the most popular of the Post-Impressionist painters, although he was not widely appreciated during his lifetime. He is now famed for the great vitality of his works which are characterised by expressive and emotive use of brilliant colour and energetic application of impastoed paint.
Many British artists have been influenced by Van Gogh and ensured he left a legacy in Britain. Harold Gilman was one of these champions. Gilman applied van Gogh’s use of bold colours and expressive brushwork to English motifs.
The second explores the impact of Van Gogh’s art and life on British artists up to the 1950s. The exhibition provides the opportunity to view artworks by Van Gogh afresh, to see British culture through his eyes and to see him through the eyes of the British artists he inspired.
Tracing Van Gogh from his obscure years in London to the extraordinary fame he achieved in Britain in the 1950s, the exhibition shows how his uncompromising art and life paved the way for modern British artists like Matthew Smith, Christopher Wood and David Bomberg.
Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch: [ˈvɪnsɛnt ˈʋɪləɱ vɑŋ ˈɣɔx] ⓘ; [note 1] 30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art.
Full name Vincent Willem van Gogh. Post-impressionist painter and draughtsman. First took up painting in 1880. In 1886 to Paris; 1888 to Arles; first attack of mental trouble in December 1888, and hence in asylums in Arles and St Rémy and then in Auvers where he shot himself in July 1890.
