Especially if you're Rome, since a seceding family can just raise armies of Praetorian Guard, which can be difficult if it happens earlier in your game. Read your options and the traits of each party (one trait always changes based on their leader), and focus on making sure they stay loyal.
Rome uses large infantry formation and high morale to overcome the enemy. Make sure you have a infantry units in reserve to fill any gaps. Roman infantry has more killing potential then hoplites for example but are useless against pike formations.
