Then, as though she were handling a delicate glass sculpture, she opened the envelope.
19 mar 2015 · If I wanted to express the idea, I'd use "then" once. After that, I'd avoid it: 0 then 1, 2, 3... I see no advantage in repeating either "then" or "next" all through the series.
"next" and "then" can both be used for an action that happens after another action but we usually use: " next ": for an action that happens immediately after another action, or as soon as possible. We can also use " next " at the end of the sentence.
5 kwi 2023 · This makes sense since their function (linking sentences) lies beyond the sentence. However, it may be just as common, if not more common, to find "then" preceded by a comma. Also, "then" can link other elements, namely phrases and words.
Depending on your point of view, you could say then conveys either addition or time sequence - but I'll go for the latter, since that's obviously the category for related alternatives such as first, next, finally.
When there is a comparison, you use than; then means: at that time; at the time in question: I was living in Cairo then | [after preposition] Phoebe by then was exhausted | [as adjective] a hotel where the then prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, was staying.
