This chapter reviews the history, theory and practice of development economics, with a focus on the concept of development and its relation to economic growth. It also discusses the role of values, instruments and objects in development, and the challenges of measuring and ranking development.
‘What is development?’ explains that there are many definitions of development and the concept itself has evolved rapidly since the Second World War. The concept now brings together economic, psychological, and environmental notions of development to meet physical, emotional, and social needs.
The author challenges the Western concept of development as a synonym for societal progress and economic growth, and argues that it is based on ahistoric and unscientific assumptions. He examines the evolutionary metaphor, the stages hypothesis, and the sustainability issue in relation to the LMICs and South Asia.
We review both the philosophical foundations and the historical roots of the concept and explain how the use of the concept within contemporary, cutting-edge theoretical models of human development finds its basis in this philosophical and historical record.
