The Knife, also known as the Butterfly Knife or Balisong, is the default melee weapon for the Spy. It is a foldable stylized butterfly knife with a handle clip and clip-point blade. When holding the weapon while within melee range at a 180° radius behind an enemy, an animation plays wherein the Spy holds the Knife aloft in a striking position.
The stock Knife has no health penalty, and allows the Disguise Kit. The Your Eternal Reward allows for a Spy to take out enemies silently, but voice communication can supersede this. The Conniver's Kunai can help a Spy survive after a backstab, but makes the Spy highly vulnerable.
A backstab with any of the Spy's knives will kill most foes in a single hit — provided they are not under the effects of any type of invulnerability. In addition to being able to swiftly assassinate key enemies, the Spy can disable and destroy Engineer-constructed buildings with his Sapper.
