On September 22, 1980, Iraqi military forces under the command of Saddam Hussein invaded Iran. Iran received 300 Type 59 tanks from North Korea and China during the Iran–Iraq War. [12] They were fielded by both the regular Artesh and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. [13]
From 1925 to the Iranian Revolution in 1979, Iran was primarily equipped with Western hardware and equipment. Cases exist where Iran was supplied with equipment before it was even made standard in the country that developed it (for example the US F-14 Tomcat jet, and the British Chieftain tank).

5 lut 2022 · The Karrar (English: Striker) is Iran’s latest Main Battle Tank (MBT). It is one of the first produced entirely by Iran and was first unveiled in 2016 and officially entered active service in 2020. It is produced on the basis of the Soviet T-72 and its external shape is inspired by the most modern Russian T-90 export version, the T-90MS ‘Tagil’.
Iran’s ground forces would acquire 104 T-72M1 battle tanks from Poland and 37 of the same model from Belarus, alongside approximately three hundred older T-62 and T-55 platforms. To enlarge its T-72 divisions, Iran acquired a licence from Russia to produce the T-72S - manufacturing over 2,500 of the battle tanks domestically.
