I've been seeing a lot of post saying that the quality retaining soil is basically useless. Like compared to the other soil mixers it lacks a bit of utility considering you can craft sprinklers which automates your watering.
I thought about trying no sprinklers with retaining soil and switching to rain totem spam late game when the fields get really big, but I never did try it.

Basic retaining soil can be purchased from Pierre from day one. But you can't afford such expenses at the very start of the game, and if you could, you'd want fertilizer instead. It can also be crafted from stone, but this requires Farming Level 4.
