Sawm is the Arabic term for fasting in Islam, which is one of the five pillars of the faith. It involves abstaining from food, drink, sexual activity and other things during the month of Ramadan, or on certain days or occasions.
4 paź 2024 · Ṣawm, in Islam, any religious fast, but especially the fast of the month of Ramadan during which Muslims abstain from food or drink each day from sunrise (fajr) until sunset (maghrib). The purpose of the fast is to practice self-restraint, piety, and generosity.
The word sawm literally means “to abstain”. In Surat Maryam, Allah tells that Mary the mother of Jesus said (“I have vowed a fast (sawm) for the sake of the Merciful, so today I shall not speak to anyone.”) (Maryam 19:26) The meaning is “I have vowed to abstain from speaking to anyone today.”
