Find viscosity tables and charts for SAE viscosity grades (viscosity and density values with their source).
In the SAE J300 standard (2021), the viscosity grades are 0W, 5W, 10W, 15W, 20W, 25W, 8, 12, 16, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60. [4][1] In the United States, these numbers are often referred to as the "weight" of a motor oil, and single-grade motor oils are often called "straight-weight" oils.
The following chart shows a comparison of different viscosity grades versus temperature range. Understanding Viscosities. The number in front of the “W” signifies the viscosity of the oil at cold/start up temperature (tested at -10 to -35°C depending on the grade. Please refer to the SAE J300 - Engine Oils Chart opposite).
Learn how to select the right engine oil viscosity grade for your vehicle based on SAE J300 standard. See the updated viscosity chart with two new grades: SAE 12 and SAE 8.
Convert your oils between standards. Several organizations (ISO, SAE, AGMA) have created competing standards to define oil viscosity ranges, but most of them mean the same thing. Oils grades that are on the same horizontal line (with the correct Viscosity Index) on the chart are equivalent.
Use our oil viscosity comparison chart to identify and reference thickness at different temperatures for engines and machinery for ISO VG, AGMA, SAE Auto, and SAE Gear lubricants.
2 kwi 2013 · The 100°C kinematic viscosity (KV100) ranges of the new viscosity grades overlap to provide adequate formulating space for these grades. How to assign a single high-temperature viscosity grade to an engine oil with KV100 in the overlap regions is covered in Section 6 of this document.
