It involves reducing the number of significant digits while retaining the general magnitude or size of the original number. The result of rounding is less accurate than the original number but simplifies calculations.
How to Round Numbers. Decide which is the last digit to keep; Leave it the same if the next digit is less than 5 (this is called rounding down) But increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more (this is called rounding up)
Rounding a number means converting a number to a simpler value such that its value remains close to what it was. Rounding numbers makes calculation simpler and converts figures to an approximate value which is easier to remember.
Rounding means making a number simpler but keeping its value close to what it was. The result is less accurate, but easier to use. Example: 7.3 rounds to 7. Because 7.3 is closer to 7 than to 8. (Note: we round to whole numbers in these examples, but we can round to tens, tenths, etc) But what about 7.5? Is it closer to 7 or closer to 8?
We round numbers according to the following rules: If the digit in the place smaller by one than the place to which we round is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, then we round the number down. Then the digit in the place to which we round does not change and smaller places are replaced by zeros. In such case we talk about under‑approximation.
