The number of prisoners in the EU rose by 24.0 % from 1993 to 2012, due to a previous rise in serious crimes across Europe [1].

SPACE I provides data on imprisonment and penal institutions annually since 1983. SPACE II collects data on non-custodial sanctions and measures since 1992 (annually since 2009).
