W latach 1960–1980 amerykański psycholog Robert Plutchik opracował teorię emocji, w której zaproponował istnienie ośmiu podstawowych emocji, ewolucyjnie naturalnie rozwiniętych. Emocje te są wrodzone i bezpośrednio odnoszą się do zachowań adaptacyjnych, które mają na celu pomoc w przetrwaniu.
Plutchik first proposed his cone-shaped model (3D) or the wheel model (2D) in 1980 to describe how emotions were related. He suggested eight primary bipolar emotions: joy versus sadness; anger versus fear; trust versus disgust; and surprise versus anticipation.
Given the complexity of emotions, Robert Plutchik created the Emotion Wheel to visualize the complexity of emotions and help people identify and label their emotions.
