This systematic review and meta-analysis provided a comprehensive analysis of the global epidemiology of overweight and obesity from 2000 to 2023 in children and adolescents younger than 18 years. The overall prevalence of pediatric obesity, overweight, and excess weight was 8.5%, 14.8%, and 22.2%, respectively.
Obesity in children is mostly due to prolonged positive energy balance with no underlying pathological cause. However, it is important to identify those with pathological or genetic causes of obesity, as the treatment strategies are different.
