Launches a TCP port scan of the most popular 1,000 ports listed in nmap-services. A SYN stealth scan is usually used, but connect scan is substituted instead for non-root Unix users who lack the privileges necessary to send raw packets.
You’ll use the netstat program to identify open ports, and then use the nmap program to get information about the state of a machine’s ports on a network. When you’re done you’ll be able to identify common ports and scan your systems for open ports.
In addition to all of the scan methods discussed previously, Nmap offers options for specifying which ports are scanned and whether the scan order is randomized or sequential. By default, Nmap scans the most common 1,000 ports for each protocol.
The simple command nmap <target> scans the most commonly used 1,000 TCP ports on the host <target>, classifying each port into the state open, closed, filtered, unfiltered, open|filtered, or closed|filtered.
