Nexus is probably the safest place to get mods for your games. Forcing premium and "custom downloader" in your face and then also requiring registration for one simple mode looks very fishy to me. 11 votes, 10 comments. I'm new to PC games, have skyrim on steam, and want to begin modding it.
Years ago someone used (apparently stolen) account password to change files from one of the mods. Old system didn't catch it immediately, due change being authorised. However, it only took few hours them to clear it out. Nexus ramped their security further after that. Now all changes are scanned and they are using up to date scanner as well.

12 lip 2014 · Nexus Mods has integrated VirusTotal's virus scanning functionality into the file pages to prevent malicious uploads and downloads. The site also plans to implement two-factor authentication and has faced some recent outages due to maintenance issues.
Nexus uses Virus Total for its virus scan. You can view the files within a download if you're suspicious. (Just click "Preview File Contents" on the mod file.) You can just download manually then scan with Windows or Malwarebytes. Then install the archive into your mod manager.
