IMO the only magic mods that ever really felt like magic were Ars Magica 2 and Thaumcraft. AM2 is not available on 1.12, and I don't even like Thaumcraft that much. Here's some hot takes about on why I don't suggest the other magic mods:

Ok seriously, Astral Sorcery is really nice. You can also try some old mods ported to 1.12 like Botania, Roots or Embers. Twilight Forest is a bossing/dungeoning dimension mod that is heavily magic themed, you'll probably like that too.
