There are some height thresholds that make you take fall dmg even in a boat for some reason. I don't remember them but it's possible you got an unlucky nunberband died. Eventually it could be something new in an update, but exiting the boat right before the landing should save you anyways
15 kwi 2011 · As was mentioned in the comments, boats do not take cumulative damage from running into things. There is a threshold of damage above which it breaks up. Below that you can bump it gently as many times as you want without losing it.

19 lut 2012 · From the Minecraft Wiki page on Boats: Running aground on slabs will inflict some amount of falling damage. The damage seems to be much worse the longer you've been in the boat. (Perhaps due to the bobbing motion at sea being counted as 'falling' distance, and cashing it all in at once).
