The longer answer is that some models could be upgraded with twice as much RAM as stock at the time of purchase at additional cost, but cannot be upgraded at all afterwards.

Yes you can get away with 8GB of RAM while using a fast SSD for swap but SSD is significantly slower than RAM. DDR5 RAM has lower latency and much faster transfer speeds than any SSD. It's around 20GB/s for DDR5 RAM while a normal SSD is usually around 200-300MB/s. A Fast NVME SSD is closer to Around 2GB/s.
